Made for learners

Two to five minutes of everyday Lisbon Portuguese, spoken clearly for people learning it. Listen once with the English, once without.

Short, and made for Portuguese ears

Radio sketches and improv, five to thirteen minutes. Native speed and native jokes, but short enough to replay a line until it lands.

Life in Portugal, in Portuguese

The radio people here actually listen to: a news bulletin, money advice, the day’s story explained.

When you can follow a conversation

Several voices, talking over each other, at the speed of friends at a table.

Why Portugal, and not just Portuguese

European Portuguese swallows its unstressed vowels, so a sentence you could read is often one you cannot hear. Brazilian Portuguese keeps them, and most courses and learner podcasts teach Brazilian. If you live here, or are moving here, this is the ear you need, and every show on this page is made in Portugal.

How to use it

Start with a short one and the English on. Loop a line you missed until it sounds like words. Then turn the English off with EN at the top and listen again. This is listening practice, not a course: it goes well with a teacher or a class, who give you the rules while this gives you hours of the real thing.
