It is the certainty of intimately knowing your surroundings, with its many variables, that makes us feel safe at home. I know that the ringing of the doorbell at 10 PM is the guard asking me to move my car, or tapping sounds are from a pipe I have procrastinated to get fixed. The chances of something going wrong in my own home is minimal, almost impossible. That’s why when Yashomati Parekh left her daughter home alone in Kolkata, she wasn’t expecting to return to a scene that changed the city forever. This is the story behind India’s first execution post Independence. This is the story of Hetal Parekh.
